Avian banding pliers

from $190.00

High precision banding pliers for the safe and easy application of tarsal bands, designed to exceed the performance of any other pliers on the market. Machined from solid hardened stainless steel to last a lifetime. 100% made in Tucson, Arizona.

Please note that all Avian Research Tools have a 30-day lead time.

The pliers shown are v1 prototypes; in January 2025 we will begin production of our v2 plier for hummingbird sizes, and make our first shipment in February 2025. Passerine sizes will begin production in February, shipping from March.

Key features

  • Two banding sizes in each plier, machined to an accuracy of ±0.01mm. This precision is important for small bird species, where even tiny snags, overlaps, or gaps in tarsal band closures can be injurious.

  • Band openings are 2% elliptical. This has proven to reduce the amount of spinning around the tarsus, which is a cause of irritation, swelling, and band loss.

  • Durable rubber grip for comfort and control.

  • No spring action for increased sensation and control for banding small birds.

  • Pivot bolt has adjustable drag, so the bander can increase or decrease resistance to their liking.

  • Band sizes are engraved and enamelled for easy readability for years.

  • 100% made in Tucson, Arizona

Specifications

  • Body: 165mm long, 6mm wide, 50mm across when closed

  • Jaws: 35mm long, 3mm wide

  • Openings: Accurate to within ±0.01mm

  • Material: 440C bearing-quality stainless steel, semi-hard (20 Rockwell C).
